很多人想減肥卻只願意節食，變成體脂偏高，外觀鬆垮，腹腔脂肪偏多。如果能增加身體的肌肉量，可提升靜態時代謝率，進而增加能量消耗。

身體的組成、肌肉比例、脂肪分布比體重更能預測健康。身體質量指數過去雖然是簡單預測新陳代謝相關症候群的簡易指標之一，但如果僅憑體重、身高，外表胖瘦，很容易忽略體重正常者也可能潛藏心血管疾病。

「身體質量指數」雖有助了解民眾是否過重，但不表示數值正常的人完全無健康問題。該指數無法顯示肌肉與脂肪的比例。
